It finally arrived: 365 days of writing

“Ik heb hier een hele leuke vriendin, Leah from USA 😃 Ze houdt van schrijven, fotograferen en ik vertelde over jouw 365 dagen schrijfcursus. Het lijkt haar heel leuk, maar dan zou ze het in het Engels willen doen. Zou je dat willen/kunnen regelen?”

Een apje van mijn lieve vriendin Sas die in Oman woont. Living the expat life to the max.

“Weet je wat zo grappig is? Ik ben een Engelse versie aan het maken 🎉 365 days of writing ✍️ Ik moet nog wat dingen tweaken maar ik geef je een seintje als het klaar is,” app ik terug.

Nu is het dan zover. We gaan internationaal, startend in Muscat. Hoe bijzonder is dat?

Het was een heel karwei om de opdrachten te vertalen en te bewerken, maar wat was het leuk! Mijn liefde voor de Engelse taal bloeide weer helemaal op. Even zag ik me weer zitten in de schoolbanken in Brielle waar meneer Reul vertelde over William Wordsworths my heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky. Of aan de sticker die meneer Huiskes op zijn deur had hangen: it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to ben ice, stond er. Die Engelse lessen hebben indruk op me gemaakt.  

Soms vroeg ik advies aan mijn Schotse vriendin Julie en soms liep ik tegen dingen aan die zo typisch Nederlands zijn, dat er geen vertaling van bestaat in het Engels. Neem nou jeugdheld Tita Tovenaar die figureert in een van de opdrachten. Dan moet je dus op zoek naar een universeler personage. En zo kwam ik weer bij The Wizard of Oz terecht waar mijn liefde voor Diana Ross en Michael Jackson ontstond. Of een alternatief voor een songtekst van De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, hoe geef je daar een draai aan? Lucy in the sky with diamonds van The Beatles werd het.

Bovendien viel me ook opeens op dat je zo gewend bent om Amerikaans en Brits Engels door elkaar te gebruiken, dat je niet meer weet welke spelling de voorkeur heeft. Is het customize of customise? Programme of program?

Anyway, het programma staat. De Nederlands schrijvende deelnemers zijn enthousiast en inmiddels verslingerd aan de dagelijkse schrijfopdrachten/ Dus heb je Engelse funloving mensen in je netwerk die van schrijven houden? “I have a really nice friend here, Leah from the USA 😃 She loves writing and photography, and I told her about your 365-day writing course. She thinks it sounds great, but she would want to do it in English. Could you arrange that?”

A message from my dear friend Sas, who lives in Oman.

“You know what’s funny? I’m actually working on an English version 🎉 365 days of writing ✍️ I still need to tweak a few things, but I’ll let you know when it’s ready,” I texted back (of course we don't app in English, but this is for our English reading readers).

And now I'm ready, going international, starting in Muscat.

It was quite a task to translate and edit the assignments, but it was so much fun! I could almost see myself back in the 80's in the classroom in Brielle, where Mr. Bert Reul told us about William Wordsworth’s My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky 🌈 Or the sticker Mr. John Huiskes had on his door: It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. My love for the English language bloomed once again.

There were days I asked my Scottish friend Julie for advice, and sometimes I ran into things that are so typically Dutch that there’s no translation for them in English. For example the typical Dutch childhood hero Tita Tovenaar, who appears in one of the assignments. I had to look for a more universal character. That’s how I ended up with The Wizard of Oz, where my love for Diana Ross and Michael Jackson began. Or finding an alternative for a song by the band De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig – how to adapt that? I chose Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by The Beatles.

It also suddenly struck me how I am used to mixing American and British English, to the point where I no longer knew which spelling was preferred. Is it customize or customise? Programme or program? The funny thing is, 365 days of writing is not about perfection, it is about letting go, about giving space to your creativity. So I let that go as well.

Anyway, the program is ready. The Dutch-speaking participants are excited and already hooked on the daily writing prompts.
